Celebrating Leadership and Legacy at Founders Day 2025
Joseph P. Ruddy ’83 to serve as keynote speaker; annual Alumni Awards to be presented

At the beginning of each academic year, Âé¶¹Ó³» celebrates the special tradition of Founders Day. This year's celebration will be held on Thursday, September 4, at 12:00 p.m. in the Joan and Macon Brock Theatre of the Susan S. Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center. This annual tradition offers the campus community an opportunity to reflect on the University’s origins, honor its distinguished alumni, and look ahead to the future with renewed inspiration.
This year’s keynote speaker is Joseph P. Ruddy ’83, a member of the VWU Board of Trustees and a 2018 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Ruddy serves as Chief Strategy Officer for the Port of Virginia, where he has been instrumental in shaping the port’s growth and innovation. A respected figure in the maritime industry, he will share insights on leadership, infrastructure, and global logistics. In recognition of his professional achievements and contributions to the region, Ruddy will be presented with The Wesley Award during the ceremony.
The convocation will also feature the presentation of the 2025 Alumni Awards, an annual honor bestowed by the VWU Alumni Council to graduates who exemplify excellence in their personal and professional lives. This year’s honorees include:

Founders Day stands as a meaningful tradition that unites Virginia Wesleyan’s past, present, and future. Through this celebration, the University reaffirms its mission and honors the individuals who continue to shape its enduring legacy.
